Having an attorney-investigator who is experienced in the legal issues that are implicated in the many situations where a complaint is made helps to insure that the investigation is focused on the right issues, and that the investigation provides direction, as well as legal protection, for the company involved.

The investigative process can also be an effective tool to aid management in making decisions, such as about employee discipline or terminations, accommodations for a disability or religious practice, or addressing internal conflict.

  • Mediation & Arbitration

A growing area of practice at Morris, Laing is alternative dispute resolution. Several Morris Laing attorneys, each with years of litigation and practical experience in their respective practice areas, regularly serve as mediators for civil cases in litigation in both state and federal court.

Mediation expertise is offered in medical malpractice, personal injury, aviation, employment and other civil cases. These attorneys have received mediation training, and believe mediation is an important alternative to continued litigation. They strive to assist parties in reaching resolution.

Another form of alternative dispute resolution is arbitration. Diane H. Sorensen is a panel member for employment cases for the American Arbitration Association. The goal of arbitration is to help litigants achieve speedy and cost-effective results.

  • Medical Malpractice

Assessing liability against a health care provider can be a difficult decision. However, in today’s medical environment, it is unfortunate that health care providers do not always meet the high trust the public bestows upon them. As a result, patients have been seriously injured and sometimes die as a result of substandard medical care.

Managing medical negligence and medical malpractice cases is a complex and difficult process. As a result, Morris Laing investigates claims of medical negligence in a thorough manner and only accepts representation when it is clear there has been a serious violation of the standard of care.

We do not take lightly the implications of making a claim against a health care provider. However, the attorneys at Morris Laing recognize that patients sustaining injury as a result of medical negligence require the highest level of representation. Morris Laing has not only the resources, but also the fine-tuned expertise to meet this responsibility.

Defective products injure and kill thousands of people every year. Federal and state regulatory agencies try to address this problem, but provide no remedies to the actual victims. The product liability attorneys at Morris Laing have long recognized the impact a product failure resulting in injury or death can have upon families. Therefore, we have developed the know-how to successfully pursue claims involving a wide list of defective products ranging from automobile air bag failure, unguarded machines, unsafe farm implements, and general defective designs.

  • Wrongful Death

The Kansas Wrongful Death Act empowers the heirs of an individual who dies as the result of negligent conduct to claim damages for their losses from the party or parties responsible for that individual’s untimely death.

These claims typically are made on behalf of surviving spouses, children and parents.  The law limits recovery to only the immediate heirs as governed by Kansas law.

Claims under the Kansas Wrongful Death Act are not only complex, but also very emotional. Our wrongful death attorneys bring a special expertise to these delicate matters with a wealth of experience dealing with wrongful death cases, which may run the gamut of motor vehicle accidents, truck accidents, medical malpractice, defective products, airplane crashes, construction accidents, and other negligent activity that might result in a person’s death. Assisting heirs through the intricacies of liability theories, damage, and injury elements is a task that can be reliably placed in the trust of the attorneys of Morris Laing.
