Roger Theis Retires After Nearly Four Decades at Morris Laing

Roger Theis has been with Morris Laing for 39 years, in addition to working as a summer associate the year before he began full-time employment in 1986. His pursuit of a legal career was influenced more by the economic climate than by a long-held desire to enter the legal profession. Upon graduating from college with liberal arts degrees during a severe U.S. recession, job prospects offering a livable wage or long-term potential were virtually nonexistent.

Faced with limited options, Roger chose to go to Mexico City to teach high school classes while applying to law schools. Although he was admittedly tired of school by then, another path of study—one that promised financial stability—was an exciting prospect.

Throughout his career, Roger has expressed deep gratitude for the many mentors at Morris Laing who helped shape his legal practice and refine his skills. He often reflects on the privilege of working at what he describes as a first-rate firm with first-rate attorneys. While law school lays the foundation for “thinking like a lawyer,” Roger credits much of his growth to colleagues like Ralph Brock, Bob Guenthner, Don Schrag, and many others whose mastery of the law left a lasting impression.

To this day, Roger remains inspired by the talent and dedication of his co-workers. With retirement now on the horizon, he looks forward to staying in touch with the firm and plans to return for occasional visits. A lifelong learner, Roger hopes to travel and continue exploring new places and hopes to maintain his Spanish fluency through continued study and immersion.
